16th January 2008Red Squirrel is perfect for 'no nonsense' campers. I can easily go into raptures about this place. The position in Glen Coe is perfect. A short walk from the pub (excellent food - I recommend the venison stew), the village and amongst the most perfect views of the surrounding hills. Close enough to Fort William and a good central point for exploring all the highlands have to offer. Get out to Mallaig and Kyle of Lochalsh. Check out Braemar and Inverness and Go up Loch Ness on the east side to Inverness and down on the west side. Stop at Fort Augustus for a cuppa. Also get out west to the Cairngorms and Aviemore. You can use Red squirrel as a great base to tour from. In the campsite you may see the RAF shoot through the glen like you've never seen flying before. I saw them go at breakneck speed once and was convinced the plane would crash into the hill - amazing skill. The facilities are very basic, but clean and the showers are very hot. I would not recommend the site for families - kids just don't appreciate natural beauty. This is a site for people that appreciate nature, wild and raw. It is surrounded by the beautiful hills of Glen Coe and set is sparse woodland. There are roughly hewn areas for your campfire, which make the place for me. Cooking over a campfire brings out the little boy in me. After a days walking there's nothing better than a hot stew and a 'wee dram' sat around the flame as the night draws in. The ground is rocky and so not easy for tents, but it's well worth the effort. This place is so amazing I can't put it into words. It is now going to be an annual place to stay. We woke up early 2 mornings on the trot to see half a dozen deer trot through the site not 20 foot from our tent - honest! Give it a try, you'll not be disappointed.
